US Defense Secretary Ash Carter stated that still some fighting needs to be done in a few areas, as the city is not completely freed from IS control yet. However, Prime Minister of Iraq hailed the day as ‘liberation’. As per a senior spokesperson, he expects that IS to "suffer a total breakdown during the next hours". Lt Gen Abdul Ameer al-Shammari said, "The enemy is collapsing. They have lost control of their fighters. They are on the run now." Brig Haider al-Obedi, special force commander, stated that 80% of the city has been controlled by government forces. Iraqi army officials said they would attempt to allow the IS militants a path out of the city to avoid heavy fighting in built-up areas. Falluja, only 50km (30 miles) west of Baghdad, has been held by IS for longer than any other city in Iraq or Syria. The militants captured the city in January 2014. | ||
