Iraq has agreed to construct a large civilian airport in the central Karbala governorate, which will be funded by the province’s Imam Hussein Holy Shrine Authority, a news network in the Arab country reported on Sunday.
“We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iraqi ministry of transport to invest in the Imam Hussein airport project…the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine will invest and fund the project,” Alsumaria news said, quoting Fowzi Al Shaher, investment supervisor in Imam Hussein Holy Shrine.
Shaher said the project would be constructed in three phases and is one of the region’s largest airports, with a capacity of 15-20 million passengers a year.
He said a French firm had already prepared designs for the project but he did not name that firm.
